Health & Safety

  • There are all kinds of reasons why organisations choose to invest in health, safety and the environment. Some are purely
altruistic whilst others are only concerned with how the organisation can benefit itself.
  • One motivation that is common to every UK organisation is the need to comply with the requirements of the law.
Whether you view the law as a help in caring for the welfare of your workforce and your environment or if you view it as
unwelcome red tape. You have to comply or face the consequences.
  • One of the difficulties faced by most organisations is in understanding the law and interpreting its requirements as they apply to
    their own specific circumstances.
  • This is where the help and advice that Burnhill can bring is invaluable. We specialise in the areas of health, safety and environment,
therefore we make it our business to be up to date with all the latest requirements of the law. We also understand how the
authorities are inclined to interpret and apply the rules.
  • As part of our service, we alert our customers to upcoming legal changes through our email newsletter, but we are only able
to offer broad brush advice through this medium. Most organisations still need professional input to guide them through the most
    effective route to compliance.
  • It is for this reason that when we start working with an organisation, we like to undertake a Compliance Review. This is, in effect,
a mini audit that identifies any areas where the organisation is failing to comply with their legal duties. We then recommend what
needs to be done to “fill the gaps”.
  • We are all aware of media stories in which organisations, with their advisors, go to extremes in trying to ensure they are complying
fully with the law. These have led to no end of silly myths developing around health and safety.

Fire Safety

Minimize the consequences of a workplace fire with a Burnhill’s Fire Risk Assessment.

The consequences of fires in the workplace are well known – loss of life, serious injury, financial loss, loss of data, smoke and water damage, business failure… the list is long. To avoid potential additional losses such as fines by the authorities or non-valid insurance claims, it is vital that your business complies with current fire safety legislation.

That means your workplace must have a full fire risk assessment (create page link) to meet the legal requirements of the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order. If you’d like to discuss your current provisions and which of our services might be of most value to you, call us today on 01942 409048
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005

This new piece of fire protection legislation significantly changed fire safety law and practice. It places the onus of responsibility squarely on a ‘responsible person’. This may be an employer, landlord or any person who has to any extent control over the building. The new legislation also includes those who are self-employed.

In addition, there is now a greater emphasis on fire protection. As of October 2006, Fire Certificates are no longer a requirement and subsequently no longer have any legal status.

What does The Regulatory Reform Order mean to me?

Responsibility for complying with the new fire safety legislation rests with the ‘responsible person’. For a workplace, this will be the employer or any other person who may have control of any part of the workplace – for example, the owner or occupier.

The ‘responsible person’ must arrange for a fire risk assessment and take reasonable steps to remove or reduce the risk. This person must also provide a suitable and sufficient level of fire precautions. These should include:

  • Appropriate measures to reduce the risk of fire
  • Appropriate measures that will limit the spread of fire
  • Appropriate measures of detection and giving warning in case of fire
  • Appropriate measures to ensure that a means of escape can be effectively used at all times
  • Appropriate portable fire extinguishers for the risk identified
  • Appropriate signs and notices to enable people to escape safely
  • Ensuring people understand the action to be taken in the event of fire on the premises, including: the instruction and training of staff; and measures to lessen the effects of fire

If you employ five or more people, you must carry out and record the findings of fire risk assessment to comply with new fire legislation.

What does the ‘Responsible Person’ have to do?

He or she is responsible for the safety of employees (and others on your premises) by effectively managing:

  • Fire Risk Assessment
  • Fire Safety Policy
  • Fire Procedures
  • Fire Drills
  • Means of Escape
  • Emergency Lighting
  • Fire Alarms and Fire Extinguishers
  • Fire Doors and Compartmentation
  • Fire Evacuations
  • Signs and Notices
  • Fire Training Courses

Supply Chain

  • In recent years, competitive pressures, globalisation and increasingly discerning consumers have forced retail corporations
to increase the number of suppliers they work with and the regions globally from which they source products. As a business
diversifies and deepens its sources of supply chain increases. Given the large number of suppliers typically involved in the retail
supply chain and given the growing social conscience of consumers and an increasing use of the internet, the likelihood of actual
brand and reputational harm as a result of poor social and ethical performance in the supply chain is greater than ever before.
  • As a result, in recent years most big brand retailers have accepted the need to take responsibility for the social and ethical performance of their supply chain. They are also recognising the benefits of a proactive approach to supplier performance improvement and the benefits of using web-based, purpose-built solutions to provide suppliers, workers, risk managers, compliance departments, boards of directors, investors, consumers, etc. with the right tools and information to constantly
